The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Business Development Manager to join a well-established and highly respected UK manufacturer of professional lighting and lighting control systems.

With a heritage spanning almost 90 years, the company has built an excellent reputation for quality, innovation and customer service. The business manufactures the majority of its products in the UK and supplies lighting solutions across a wide range of sectors, including rail, infrastructure and utilities.

This is a newly focused opportunity to develop and grow business across the railways and utilities markets.

The Role

Working as part of the Business Development team, you will be responsible for identifying new opportunities, developing key relationships and driving projects from initial engagement and specification through to successful conclusion.

The role will involve regular engagement with:

  • Rail operators, infrastructure organisations, engineering & design consultancies
  • Main contractors and specialist contractors
  • Lighting consultants and specifiers
  • Engineering and design consultancies
  • End users and other key stakeholders

You will also work closely with internal Sales Engineers, Design and Project teams to ensure customers receive the right technical and commercial solution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and develop new business opportunities across rail and utilities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, consultants, contractors and specifiers.
  • Develop and manage a project pipeline through CRM and other reporting systems.
  • Conduct customer meetings, presentations, CPDs, site visits and surveys.
  • Develop and manage lighting specifications through to successful project completion.
  • Provide specialist rail-sector guidance to internal Sales Engineers.
  • Prepare tender submissions, business cases and ROI proposals.
  • Monitor competitor activity, market trends, products and pricing.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant railway design standards, guidance and regulations.
  • Audit and submit design proposals for rail projects.

About You

The successful candidate is likely to have:

  • Proven experience in business development, technical sales or specification-led sales.
  • Experience within rail, infrastructure, utilities, construction or a related technical sector.
  • A strong understanding of the UK rail environment.
  • Experience engaging with consultants, specifiers, contractors and end users.
  • A demonstrable track record of developing opportunities and converting specifications into sales.
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience with tenders, proposals or business cases.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and relationship-building skills.
  • The confidence to engage with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong organisational and CRM skills.
  • A proactive and self-motivated approach, particularly when working remotely.
  • Flexibility to travel for customer meetings, site visits and exhibitions.
